THREE’S MORE FUN IN THE ROOMY SEAT OF THIS OFF-ROAD VERSION OF THE FABLED RUNABOUT

IT’S BEEN MORE THAN 100 YEARS since the great-granddaddy of this sleek curved-dash runabout puffed and wheezed its way into into the hearts of America’s early motorists.

This half-sized version is just as apppealing, but without the mechanical ‘bugs’ that plagued Grandpa. There’s no crank to turn, and the original wooden seats are now foam padded.

Under the tonneau (that’s the rear deck), there’s an up-to-date one-cylinder gasoline engine fitted with a 6-1 gear reduction unit, with chain drive direct to the rear axle.

Tiller steering, an automatic centrifugal-type clutch, a foot brake, and a foot throttle give complete control of the vehicle to the operator. Engine size determines vehicle speeds. A 3hp engine produces speeds of 15mph. A 5hp engine puts you in the 30mph+ area.

It can be built of metal angle, channel, plywood, or tubing found in most Home Depot, and Lowe’s lumber stores for just over $100; not including the engine, squeeze-bulb horn, or any street-legal accessories you may wish to add later (turn signals, lights, fenders, rear view mirror, license plate frames, heavy-tread bicycle tires, etc.) Check local restrictions.

Painted in its original bright red with gold-and-black trim, Merry Runabout is ideal for parades, pep rallys, short trips to the mall, or just plain fun around your estate.
